JOURNEY WITH THE SOUND OF THE CRYSTAL BOWLS

With Philippe Garnier

DECEMBER 4th
COSM 542 W 27th Street 4th Fl.

It is the opportunity to feel yourself energized and vibrating at a higher frequency, merging with the Sacred Sound of the Crystal Bowls. Experiencing Scared Space,
and letting the Healing take place.

Sound (the word) is the original creational tone. Everything is made up of energy at various frequencies. All things in nature vibrate to sound, light and color. Sound frequencies effect everything about us. The correct vibrational frequencies can be used to heal and balance our bodies.

Sound healing is the practice of using sound to realize and correct imbalances in the body. Sound healing works on the belief that the human body is not solid. Rather it is energy that is held together by sound. Any disease therefore indicates that some sound has gone out of tune.

Healing with sound
BY LAUREN YANKS • FOR LIVING & BEING • NOVEMBER 2, 2008

It's always nice to turn on some favorite music after a stressful day to help relax and find balance. The vibrations of a great song can lift your spirits almost immediately.
"Everything vibrates," said Philippe Garnier, a healer who uses sound to balance and transform the body. "We all vibrate at our own frequency. Different sounds can unblock certain vibrational energy where there's congestion."
Originally an art director for a magazine in Paris, Garnier was 35 when he decided to change the course of his life.

"I went to live in the New Mexican desert with an Apache tribe," he said. "I met a medicine man, and he taught me different types of ceremonies. It was there that I began to explore the healing power of sound."

Around the world, indigenous cultures use sound - whether through singing, drumming and chanting - as part of their healing ceremonies. Most modern sound healers draw on these traditional methods in some way.

"These ceremonies taught me that our body is a symphony with different instruments," Garnier said. "For instance, even our organs vibrate. When something is sick, like a kidney, you can bring a tone to help heal it."

Feeling called to bring what he learned to others, Garnier now lives in Woodstock and runs the Sage Center for the Healing Arts with his wife, Lea Moore. Offering both private and group healing sessions, Garnier plays nine crystal bowls with a suede wand. He believes he is just a conduit to the universal energy field.
"I never know what I'm playing," he said. "I just have to be totally open to love, compassion and healing in order to become a link and allow the healing to come through me."

The crystal bowls Garnier uses give off different sounds that are said to correlate with the different chakras, or energy points, in the human body. He and Moore, a craniosacral therapist, often work together, combining cranio and sound therapy. Craniosacral therapy focuses on finding and correcting imbalances in the central nervous system.

"Sometimes we work together on a client," Moore said. "It helps enhance and deepen the healing process."

Moore has also benefited from her husband's sound healing.

"I'm a painter, and I paint a lot on my knees, and they get sore," she said. "After my last sound healing session with Philippe, my kneecaps felt better. I also felt my spine unwinding, and my whole body becoming grounded."

Katya Varlamova works in finance and recently became interested in the healing power of sound.

"I'd never done sound healing, but was very interested in how sound affected the body," said the Manhattan resident, who attends programs at the Sage Center. "It's truly an amazing experience. It fine-tunes your physical, mental and spiritual body. It relaxes and realigns you."

Not too long ago, Varlamova had a motorcycle accident and had a lot of broken bones.

"The sound healing helped to enhance my healing capacity," she said. "It also helped to quiet the mind and let me know I'm exactly where I'm meant to be. After a session, my body vibrated at a different level."

Peter Blum is also a sound healer. The Saugerties resident has been around music his whole life.

"My father was an operatic baritone, and I grew up listening to all kinds of music," he said. "In my late teens, I began to have experiences where music took me into altered states of consciousness."

In the late 1980s, Blum began to study hypnosis.

"I started to understand everything through the lens of what induces hypnotic states - states where people throughout time have been able to heal and receive guidance. I came to realize that they all used sound, whether it was drumming, rattles, flutes or their own voices."

In the 1990s, Blum began to study sound as a healing modality. He now offers group and private sessions in yoga studios and similar venues throughout the area.

"I've been using a lot of Himalayan singing bowls, which are made out of metal - they're an alloy, but mostly made of bronze. The crystal bowls are much newer. Himalayan singing bowls have been around for thousands of years. I believe they are alive and teach me what to play."

Blum also plays the tamboura -a North Indian string drone instrument, and he teaches people to heal themselves as well.
"The one instrument we all have is voice," he said. "I teach tonal exercises so that people can go home and use sound to heal themselves."

Blum believes sound can heal physical pain, such as muscular aches, stiff joints and indigestion.

"A lot of indigestion is based on things that are not moving through the digestive tract," he said. "Sound helps to break up blockages."

Blum also believes sound can affect emotional well-being.

"Our whole body is in vibration, including the brain," he said. "Sounds affect brainwave activity. We can change our mood by changing our brain patterns."

Barbara Hagstrom, a psychiatric nurse in Pine Hill, recently experienced her first sound healing session.

"It was just wonderful - very healing," she said. "I could feel the different sounds tapping into different parts of me, like into my jaw or my feet. And at some point, I realized I could radiate these vibrations to other people."

Numerous studies have been conducted throughout the world on the benefits of sound on the body. According to the nonprofit educational association American Music Conference, studies over the last 10 years have shown a link between a specific type of group drum playing with an increase in "natural killer" cell activity - a mechanism for fighting viral illnesses and cancer. Another showed an increase of melatonin - a hormone linked to the immune system - for patients with Alzheimer's disease. Numerous studies also show links between music and brain development.

"I know from my work that certain sounds can be really healing for people experiencing anxiety or depression," Hagstrom said. "The sound healing I experienced made me feel marvelous from head to toe. I felt like I had a whole body healing. It's very cleansing."

Garnier runs three group programs a month at his center, and he invites other sound healers, including Blum, to participate. He believes sound healing can be life-changing.

"Everything in the world has a sound, even if we can't hear it because it's out of our range," Garnier said. "It's truly amazing what sound can do for you."

Monday June 23, Woodstock New York (Press Release)
Sage Center for the Healing Arts; This unique facility is headed by founders: Lea Moore with a background in Cranio Sacral Therapy and Philippe Garnier with a background in Energy Work using, Pranic and Sound Therapy.

LEA MOORE is using a gentle hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the function of the Cranio Sacral System (the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid, which surround and protect the brain and spinal cord). Trained at The Upledger Institute, Moore uses Craniosacral Therapy to release motion restrictions and promote the body's natural self-healing mechanism.  She has treated a diverse population, addressing a wide range of common health problems and medical disorders, including back & neck pain, accident related trauma, migraine headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears, release of accumulated emotional trauma, rheumatoid arthritis, TMJ and fibromyalgia. Her gentle method has been very effective in treating children with chronic ear infections, learning disabilities and ADD/ADHD.

PHILIPPE GARNIER works with the comprehensive system of subtle energy healing utilizing “prana” (a sanskrit word meaning 'life force') to cleans, balance, harmonize and transform the body's energy processes. With the help of the crystal bowls and the art of using sound to recalibrate and realign energy centers (chakras) to release unwanted blocks and come to an ideal balance of energy and health. Both modalities improve and transform a range of physical and emotional states. Including chronic illness, allergies, compulsive behavior patterns, trauma and grief.  His energetic combination of sound healing and pranic therapy is informed by shamanic principles and plant spirit medicine.

Lea and Philippe often work together combining Cranio & Sound Therapy to deepen and excellerate the healing process.  The combination of these two modalities offers the client a completely unique experience, offered only at Sage.
